Phenyl ethylbenzene ethane (PEE) was synthesized by the alkylation of ethyl benzene and styrene with solid acid consisted of non-metallic minerals as catalyst. The process conditions were investigated, and the refined PEE product was characterized by using FT-IR and GC-MS. The performance test of refined PEE product was carried out. The results showed that the optimal conditions were the catalyst (80-100 mesh particle size) dosage of 3%, ethylbenzene to styrene molar ratio of 7, reaction temperature of 140, styrene titration time of 2 h, reaction time of 4 h, under which the yield of phenyl ethylbenzene was 74%. Confirmed by FT-IR and GC-MS spectra the refined product was of the structure of phenyl ethylbenzene ethane. The performance of refined PEE product reached the standard of GB/T2536-2011 (45#), with an increased effect of the breakdown voltage of industrial white oil. The refined PEE product could be used as transformer oil or transformer oil additives.
